Dear Ilona John Cipko has been working as a volunteer interpreter at the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust since 1st September 2014. On average, to start with, he has been doing 5-10 hours a week and in the last few months even more. It is fair to say that since his inception to an In-House Polish Interpreting Service has done close to 730 hours interpreting. If you include work John had done in other agencies this is now close to 850 hours. John’s contribution to the Trust efficiency programme has been significant. Our volunteering team has been recommended for the award for the best volunteering team although the final results are not published as yet. During his time working for NUH, I always found John punctual, responsive, and keen to learn from his mistakes, indeed striving for excellence. I had a lot of good feedback pertaining to John’s performance from clinicians and patients alike. Indeed many of them requested John’s services for follow up appointments. In the first three months, I also had one complaint concerning John’s code of conduct. The clinician perceived John’s familiarity with the female patient as inappropriate behaviour. John had tried to demonstrate a female patient an exercise advised by physiotherapist and in the process, inadvertently touched her leg. It is very important to stress that the patient had not complained however but the clinician felt it was not right. We had a training session since then concerning interpreters’ code of conduct and the importance of strict adherence to the scope of interpreting. We have also addressed advocacy style and confidentiality. I have met with John on numerous occasions to discuss his reflections on assignments and each time found John inquisitive and receptive to advice given. In April 2015 he made a decision to undertake formal ISL course and it is pleasure to observe him progressing further and higher. It is fair to say that John’s command of English is better than Polish however as his family life language is Polish; I believe he is continuously improving his Polish common expressions, medical terminology Polish equivalents and grammar to the huge benefit of his interpreting role. John is popular with his clients and in the NUH interpreting society. Yours sincerely, Renata Towlson Interpreting & Translation Project and Contract Manager Human Resources

Performance overview November 2015- January 2017 John Cipko provides interpreting services to NUH consistently at a good level of customer satisfaction. In the stated above period there were no complaints pertaining to John’s work at all. I have indeed received a positive feedback. John is continuously looking to widen his experience and expertise. He is not only providing linguistic support to health care market but also to educational organisations’ clients. It is a requirement that interpreters working for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust keep up to date with interpreting industry standards and developments and ensure personal application. John Cipko is a Level 3 certified community interpreter and as such do not require my supervision. However, whenever he wishes to discuss an interpreting case, I am more than happy to make time for him. Yours sincerely, Renata Towlson (PhD, CIL4) Interpreting & Translation Manager Human Resources
